In a world where burial services are prohibitively expensive for much of the population, where some countries are already running out of space to inter bodies many people think cremation is the only option. The negatives of cremation are little known to most; from releasing mercury vapor and other harmful compounds into the atmosphere, to the energy consumption, and the way that it vaporizes and even destroys many of nutrients within our bodies taking them out of the natural cycle.
Human remains composting, also known as terramation, is the practice of using microbes already present in the human body to break the body down into fertile soil that can then be used for tree plantings, house plants, flower boxes, anything that you and your dearly departed may wish. US law rightfully has a lot of red tape around the handling of human remains, but it can tend to get in the way of the wishes of some for how, and where they would like to be remembered, the regulations around where bodies may be buried has made the family graveyard essentially obsolete, making terramation, to my knowledge, the only legal way to create a family graveyard.
